  • 1 Percent Rule

    1 Percent Rule

The 1% rule is simple: improve just 1% each day. The idea is that if you do this, the good habits you develop stack over time. You can’t be a master in one day. You have to improve a little every day. Rome wasn’t built in a day and you won’t be either.

Stop focusing on the end result and start paying attention to the process.

It doesn’t take much to do every day, but it also doesn’t take much to NOT do it. The difference is a slippery slope. Are you going to be the person who improves 1% each day or the one who gets worse each day? If you think staying the same is an option – it’s not. Every day you don’t get better, you simply get worse.

So when it’s nighttime and you’re winding down for bed, ask yourself:

“What have I done today to improve by 1 tiny percent?”

Improve a little each day. It compounds. When 1% compounds every day, it doubles every 72 days, not every 100 days. Compounding tiny excellence is what creates big excellence.”

72 days later you might be twice the person you are today. Think you can’t manage that? Let’s do some math. Compounding creates fast results.

Assuming you get roughly 8 hours of sleep a night, that’s 16 waking hours for you to do something to improve. 16 x 60 minutes = 960 minutes. 1% of 960 is 9.6. If you add just 10 minutes of something positive into your life each day, you’ll become unstoppable.

One of the most important discoveries in the field of psychology and success is that fully 95% of what you think, feel, do and achieve is the result of habit.  Since childhood, you have developed conditioned responses that lead you to react, often unthinkingly to situations in life.  The exciting thing is that all habits and skills are learned. New, good habits and skills can be learned through conscious practice and repetition.  Likewise, old, poor habits can be un-learned.

The 1% Formula is based on the Law of Incremental Improvement…basically, that by the yard it is hard, but inch by inch it’s a cinch?

Do you believe it is possible to improve your overall productivity, performance, and output by 1 percent in the next 24 hours? Will you commit to increasing your productivity and performance by 1% each day?

My answer is YES…If you continually learn, study, and upgrade your skills, clarify and re-clarify your goals, set better and clearer priorities and focus on progressively more valuable tasks…You can increase your productivity and performance by 1 percent each working day…day after day…indefinitely!

How can you improve by 1% each day?

Every day, try to wake up and think, “how can I be a little better?” If you forget in the morning, that’s OK. You have 16 other hours in the day to remember.

If you read 5 pages a day from non-fiction books, then in a year you will have read 1830 pages of knowledge. And each page you read will build upon the pages you’ve read before.

And it’s 1830 pages 99% of people won’t read. Most people don’t pick up a book after age 20.

If you write 1000 words a day, then in one day that’s nothing. In one year that’s the equivalent of 6-8 novels.

    Every day matters.

The 1% Rule can be applied to everything. If you spend 1 less minute feeling regret and use that to feel gratitude, how much better will your stress levels will that be in one year.

Stress is 100% reverse correlated with a longer healthier happier life. With more money. With more love. With more creativity.

Every habit can be built using this technique.

Actions are outside of the head or body. Take 1% action per day.

It doesn’t happen in one day. There are no goals. There’s only practice. Practice never makes perfect. Practice makes you happy. Practice makes habits.

What is something you can do 1% of to grow your business today?

  • Are your employees set up for Success?

Are your employees set up for Success?

“Employee engagement” is a catchall term, not to mention an endlessly marketable consulting concept.  Many business owners are skeptical about their own “employees’ engagement.”

According to Gallup, when employee engagement is properly measured, engagement extends beyond an assessment of how happy your employees are on the job.  It also reveals whether that happiness manifests itself into superior performance.

So, how do you know if you have “engaged employees?”

Here are 12 simple indicators of an engaged employee.  Ideal employees will state these indicators are true. If your employees believe these indicators are false, then you have work to do.

    1. I know what is expected of me at work.  Many employees think they are doing what is expected of them, which may or may not be the case. Have you sat down with them and detailed out what you expect of them?
    • I have the materials and equipment I need to do my work right.  Some employees have to duct tape things together for them to do their job. Are you providing them the proper materials and equipment so they can succeed?
    • At work, I have the opportunity to do what I do best every day. What opportunities are you providing your employees to shine and be the best?
    • In the past seven days, I have received recognition or praise for good work. I would bet many employers or managers have not praised any of their employees in quite some time.
    • My supervisor, or someone at work, seems to care about me as a person. Do you know your employees?  Know about their goals and personal life.
    • There is someone at work who encourages my development. Who is the champion in your business that encourages others to develop themselves professionally and personally?
    • At work, my opinions seem to count.  Are you listening to your employees, or just nodding your head yes when they talk to you, then ignore what they said?
    • The mission or purpose of my company makes me feel my job is important.  What is the mission or purpose of the company? Is the staff behind that mission?
    • My associates or fellow employees are committed to doing quality work. Do you have that toxic or bad apple in the organization? They could be dragging down the good employees.
    1. I have a best friend at work.  Have you ever asked to find out if this is true?
    1. In the past six months, someone at work has talked to me about my progress. When was the last time you had a 1-on-1 meeting with your staff and discussed their progress? Most companies do this once a year which is a travesty.
    1. In the past year, I have had opportunities at work to learn and grow. What opportunities are you providing your employees to learn and grow? Those employers that provided growing opportunities have long-term successful employees.

These are simple indicators to address employees’ primary needs. How they contribute to the entire operation of the business. If they feel valued or not. Do they fit into the organization? Are you as the owner developing them for the future?

    How engaged are your employees?

  • Time Management Tips

    Time Management Tips

Everyone is given the same amount of time each day. It is up to us to manage this time as we would any other precious, nonrenewable asset.

As the saying goes, “Time is money.”

Time management is at the very core of any successful businessperson. High-performing business owners know how to concentrate on results while ineffective business owners concentrate on just being busy.

If you focus on task achievement rather than tension-relieving diversions, then your bank account will reflect your output with just 0’s and no numbers before it.

One of the biggest killers for business owners is procrastination. In reality, it would take you less time to do that task at hand than all the time you spend thinking about it and avoiding the task. Develop a “Get it done” attitude.  As Brian Tracy stated, “Eat that Frog.” Which means do the one thing that you have to do to grow your business but are wanting to avoid first? Then everything after that will be easy. Don’t procrastinate – eat that frog.

People manage time by managing their activities and managing activities beings with planning.

So, how do you do that?

    Simple.

    1. Plan your day the night BEFORE.  List and prioritize the top 5 objectives you desire to accomplish when you get to the office. Put the frog as number one and stay with it until it is completed. Do the most difficult tasks first.
    • If you need to sell, then your #1 priority is making appointments. If you do not have an appointment with a prospect, then get on the phone and make one. Make your phone calls in the morning when you are fresh and alert. One simple strategy is to make a list of names with phone numbers of all the people you need to call the next day. Put that list on your desk with nothing else around it. When you get into your office and go to your desk you have the list of people to call and that is what you do first. No searching for their names and numbers.  Just start calling.
    • DND. Do not disturb. Let others know when you do not want to be disturbed. Close your office door and stay focused on the task at hand. With no distraction (people, phone, email, computer, etc.) watch how fast you can complete a task.
    • Get to the office early. Early bird gets the worm. By getting into the office early you may have that quiet time to complete many tasks while being undisturbed.
    • Avoid long personal phone calls, lunches, and coffee breaks. How much of your day do you spend with a client or actively prospecting for a new business?  Use an activity log to track how you spend your time. You will be very surprised by the results.
    • Delegate, delegate, delegate. Stop doing all the administrative and paperwork duties. Focus your efforts on the things that you need to do to grow your business. When in doubt on a task, ask yourself, “What is the best use of my time right now?”

What are you going to implement today to be better at managing your time?
